THE RACE IS ON FOR SUNDAY!

Hey friends
We are on for the 5th Wells River Rumble this sunday! (April 27)
First off: the level

I was just out there yesterday and let me tell you, 850 cfs is fantastic, and if my guess is correct the river should be at an AWESOME level... fun and juicy... for the race. The weather forecast looks good too.

Second: the details
The competitors meeting will be at 12:30 at the putin. The race will start immediately after that. The putin is about 1.5 miles east on Rte 302 of the I-91 exit for wells river, at an old blocked off bridge. It's pretty easy to find. Please park at the VT fish and game lot about 100 yds further east. And please show up early for practice runs. You will want one if the level stays high, and it probably will. There will be a longboat class (over 9ft long) and a shortboat class (under 9ft long) at the very least, but if there are a slew of competitors we will split it up further. In the past we've done all mass starts, some full length, some partial. We will at the very least do one full length mass start run that will count substantially toward the overall result. In addition to that we will likely continue to do 4 short sprint heats over the course of the run. For these we will likely split into brackets for fairer starts and better competitive chances for everyone than in years past. The final format will be determined on the day of the race depending on conditions and entrants. The race is being sponsored again this year by Still River Outfitters, who have generously agreed to throw in some excellent prizes as they did last year (last year's prizes included a drybag, life jacket, tshirt, gift certificates etc). In addition the top finishers in the longboat and shortboat classes will take home a sweet sweatshirt.

Thirdly: Spectation
It will be spectacular. The banks are snow free and dry. The river is pumping. This makes for easy spectating. Bring your friends.

Fourthly: Entry
Entry is $10. You must be of sane mind to enter. I will trust your inestimable powers of self-verification. For your $10 entry and assurance of sanity you get a sweet tshirt and a shot at the prizes. Witness the excellency of your future shirt:
THE FRONT

and THE BACK

yes this is navy blue.

alright enough of this blah blah blah.
let's do this!
get out there and get your practice runs in!
email creekrace at dartmouth dot edu with questions

see you SUNDAY!

ps: i think this might fall into the category of 'irrelevant' to some dyed-in-the-wool creekers, and perhaps for those who believe surfing is an endeavor meant for warmer water, but for those who are less than singleminded with respect to their whitewater disciplines and have the disposition to endure snowmelt for good waves... probably the best 2 waves in the upper valley right now are on the connecticut river just upstream of the Rte 302 bridge. aka 2 miles from the race. bring your playboat ifn this is your thing.
